Theme for the 30th Anniversary Commemorative Magazine – ‘The Practice of Human-Realm Buddhism’
1) The difference between Human-Realm Buddhism and Human Vehicle Buddhism:
Human-Realm Buddhism is the practice of the Bodhisattva Path in the human realm, and comes under the umbrella of the Mahayana sect. However, Human Vehicle Buddhism is the Human Vehicle in the Five Vehicles of Buddhism.
2) Human-Realm Buddhism and Human-Life Buddhism
Similarities: Both emphasize practicing the Bodhisattva Path in the human realm, and focuses on human beings, whilst doing away with beliefs in gods or ghosts. Amongst all the worlds of the ten directions, it pays attention to this world. Amongst the three periods, it stresses the present period, especially transcending the world and still engaging the world in the present period.
Differences: The former practices the Bodhisattva Path directly in the human realm. The latter practices the Human Vehicle in the human realm then followed by practicing the Bodhisattva Path, as once the human is enlightened, he / she becomes a Buddha. The former is based on Indian Buddhism; the latter on Chinese Buddhism. The former is based on the history of Buddhism thoughts; the latter on a religious standpoint. The former sees Madhyamika as the ultimate goal; the latter sees Tathagatagarbha as complete. The former is based on ‘The Three Essentials in Following the Buddha Dharma’ encompassing all of the Bodhisattva Path; the latter is based on the traditional Six Paramitas as the Bodhisattva Path. The former removes deva-centric orientation; the latter does not.
3) The key points of Human-Realm Buddhism
The Human-Bodhisattva Vehicle: Practice the Bodhisattva Path as an ordinary person in the human realm until the Enlightenment.
Timely Teaching of the Timeless Truth: Timeless Truth is with reference to the combination of the Dharma and Vinaya, unison of Dependent Origination and Nature (of things) is Empty and combination of benefiting others and self-benefiting. These are the principles of the doctrine. Timely Teaching refers to its focus on the faith of the youth, engaging the world and having a healthy organization.
The Human-Bodhisattva Practice: ‘The Three Essentials in Following the Buddha Dharma’ encompasses the Six Paramitas and the Four All-Embracing Virtues. 1) Faith, which includes resolve and right effort. 2) Wisdom, which includes concentration and expedient means. 3) Compassion, which includes giving, precepts and patience.
4) Key points on topics of the article
With reference to Education, Culture, Welfare, Recreation, and General Affairs sub-committees, select a small segment from the above three points. For example, a Recreation sub-committee choir member can write about how they practice the Human-Realm Buddhism’s aspiration while singing and interacting with fellow members. Please refrain from writing directly on the practice of Human-Realm Buddhism, as it is a broad topic more suitable as a PhD thesis.
